once you do find something, it won't take long and you'll be walking around with dirt under your fingernails and your MD in the car ready to go

Jason, I'm a ex Vietnam vet. All U.S bases I was station at the time had plenty of champ grounds nearby, some of the champ sites being as old or older than the fort.
When I was in, I champed out overnight in a little basically unknown champ site near the base, that night we had a very heavy rain, the next morning I found a walking liberty of the surface, wish I had a medal detector than.
The military once paid in gold coinage some if not many coins got lost, being carried in pant pockets. Learn your detector by digging everything.
