I'd love to hunt an old property like that! I think it would be better to cut a smaller, 3 sided plug though, or better yet, a slit. It's likely those plugs will die and leave a brown spot there until the grass recovers. A piece of plastic or a towel would help hold all the extra dirt and make it easier to funnel it back into the hole too. Good hunting!
