Any ideas?? All the pieces were found in one hole...I think the first pic is how you put it together maybe...Its iron and the large thing is copper. It was pretty deep.

I am assuming from your layout that the copper plate went over the iron piece...but what are the over all diminisions. It kind of looks like the peice that attached to the bottom of old oak swivel bankers chairs.

I think gypsyheart is on the right track.Certainly appears to be some kind of swival adjustment.

I am having to go with a side rear view mirror. The glass would have been held in place by the crimped edges of the brass piece that would have been attached to the iron adjustable part. trk5capt...

I think something is missing in the middle and that it looks to me the rusty part with the wingnut would be mounted through a board, wall, and be horizontal. A glass globe would sit on it and the brass part would top it off, like an oil lamp, or an old automobile headlamp.

Thanks for all the help guys! automobile headlamps seem to be round so i was leaning towards a lantern with a square top like one of these: the copper part qould have gone on top :)

What would that look like jim? whatever it is it seems adjustable because of the wing nut.
