Welcome from NYC. VA is a good place to start if you plan to go into professional archeology, though succeeding in that profession is more about who you know rather than necessarily how much you know. My advice is to try and volunteer at the Smithsonian, not too far a drive, and make contacts with those federally employed archeologists and conservationists that live in the "basement". I've been down there, they're awesome highly passionate people. I would also recommend studying Paleontology, as this is the bread and butter of many of the true professionals.
