Detector(s) used
Minelab GPX-4500 & F75-LTD
Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
I'm about to get my first detector and I thought I'd get some help from you seasoned veterans. I'm thinking about a MXT or TEJON. I'd like to search the farmsteads here in Washington state and then down the road try to get invited to one of the Civil War digs. So coins, relics, ets. would be what I hope to find. I would apprecitate greatly any input, I don't want to buy something cheap but rather someting that I could enjoy for awhile. I'm willing to put in the hours to learn the machine.

Thanks alot, Dand

Well, since you are on the Tesoro board, I recommend the Tejon. I love mine! I use an XLT which is very similar to the MXT and I enjoy hunting with it but when I am serious about relics I use the Tejon. Very easy to master and a lifetime warranty. Very light weight to boot. What more could you ask for! HH!

You would love the Tejon for all the right reasons.

Can't speak to the Tejon but I can tell you I love my Deleon. It is very simple to use, light weight, runs forever on a set of batteries and is just a fun detector to use. I bought it used and I have only had two problems with it so far. The bolt holding the coil on broke, but that was a known issue and I sent an email and Tesoro sent out a new better bigger one, and the handgrip in mine needs replaced. I am sending it in this winter to get a new grip and tune up. I love my Tesoro. Hope this helps. I was going to buy the MXT or Prism IV I'm glad I went with Tesoro!

Thank you for the feedback guys!!!!!!! What earphones would you recommend? Maybe GREY GHOST? This is a great site with a heck of bunch of nice guys and gals, I appreciate anybody's input to help me out.

I would also reccomend the Tejon since it leans toward being a better relic and coin detector. The MXT is also a great detector but I think the Tejon in this case has more to offer you. The Grey Ghost headphones are exceptional as well as the Killer B's.If you need any more help please let me know.

Grey Ghost headphones are fine and so are some others. It is best if you can try them on at a shop to check for fit and comfort. Most of the higher cost ones are comfortable to the most people, that is why they cost more. However the plain stereo jobbies aren't made for rough conditions.

I use Killer B's and RATs. Both are excellent phones.

dand,

Based on what you said,if you decide to go with Tesoro I think you are making the right choice with the Tejon. The Vaquero is a good machine but lacks the duel ED180 discrimination circuits. Also the trigger switch is much easier, faster, and cleaner to use in the field relic hunting. Like Sandman said,You will love it for all the right reasons if you go with the Tejon. Joe

Tejon w/ Killer B's is a great combo. If you can afford it, pick up the 5.75 coil also.

Ian, Which style of the KILLER B do you recommend? Thank you for the info I really appreciate it.

I have only used the "Optima" series green single volume control B's. They are great. They were recommended to me, and they are better than the cheap ones I've used. I think they retail for $89. They are VERY comfortable and deep sounding. However, if you are on a budget (aren't we all) - any headphone will work okay. Calarads work good and are cheap. You might do better with some cheap headphones for now and put the difference toward that 5.75 concentric - i swear by that thing. You can do w/o expensive headphones but can't do w/o that small coil if you want to find coins in trash.

Also, if you are so inclined - you can often snag a used Tejon for $350-$400 on the classified ads , often w/ headphones. That's one heck of a deal.

Good Luck,

Ian

Don't count out the vaquero! It is cheaper and would be a good starter machine as well as the cibola. The Tejon is the king relic machine from what I hear but I have been impressed with both the cibola and the vaquero. Go to metal detectorreviews . com. Very helpful. Good luck .
