Newbie finds gold ring

4 times out with new excal and came across a 10kt , 6.1g girl,s school ring. My first gold ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! Being that its my first ring and decent find of any kind(exept a 1920 wheat penny)which doesn't even come close. And the fact that I'm an unemployed construction worker, means I get to keep the ring,right?

Congrats on finding your first gold ring. There are many more out there.

Good things come to those that do good deeds. At least try to contact the person that lost the ring. She might offer you a reward. Even if she doesn't you will feel good that you returned to her something special. That will make you feel good too and when one thinks positive in those moments good things do come around.

Good luck, you will find more with time.

I agree with jpotter as we have a code of ethics we all should follow. If you find a ring with identification marks like a class ring then you should first attempt to return it to the owner :thumbsup:

Maybe you will get a reward and maybe not. However, the feeling you will get by the look on their face is priceless :icon_king:

I know it is difficult being unemployed and have been in that position myself more than twice and it is no fun. >:(

But good things will come and you may want to consider checking the dry sand for clad coin. A couple of dollars here and there adds up quickly. So Welcome to the Forum, Happy Hunting, and I am sure if you return the ring you will be rewarded some way.

Returning jewelry/rings is a hot topic. I know some who don't and some who do. I have only found two gold diamond rings. I asked the people in charge of the areas if they had any reports of lost rings, and in each case none were made. I stopped short of advertising in the paper as I don't want to advertise I have found jewelry and deal with low life cheats trying to get something for nothing. The school ring is the number one returned jewelry item. Tracing schools, graduating years and possibly initials make it easier.

The bottom line is it is each person own decision as to return items or not. I have only found the owner of an earring and recovered a lost coin (special foreign coin brought to a camp and lost, then found). On both occasions the feeling it gave was great. As a final note there are situations when I would not return a found item.

I'm sorry, I forgot to say welcome to the forum.

This place will give you many good ideas on where to hunt or how to hunt, etc.

I'm sorry about the unemployment issue. Let's all hope that things turn around for all of us.

I agree with Born2dtect it really depends on the situation. Class rings are an achievement of the person who is graduating and obviously it is a very personal item. If you try to contact the previous owner and get no response then it is yours. Also be careful about putting an advertisement for lost and found, you will just get calls from thieves.

You will see for your good deeds life will reward you more. Having it on your mind that you could have done something nice for someone but didn't will stick in your mind and eat at you. At least that is my own personal experience, each person is different.

I just needed a little nudge. Actually the unemployment is a little more like an extended vacation. Found the Ridley High School inPA,will try and find miss A.M.L. Now,back to the beach,c'mon karma.

When I see gold in the scoop I get this warm tingly feeling all over (no I didn't pee on myself

) It's a feeling of now I know why I'm out here.....

Good luck on finding the owner. It's sometimes an easy process. I have been trying to return one for almost one month. The owner won't respond to me. Maybe she is on vacation. The ring I found has the girl's full name, first and last and is from this year.

I just contacted the school. Lady tlod me to put it in an envelope and mail it back. Gave her my phone#and told her if she can find the girl tell her to give me a call. The ring is a 2007, and has a pink stone.

I'm going to start surf searching soon. So I know how thrilled you must be to find gold!
Here are my thoughts regarding your question of if you should keep the ring:
First I agree with the other members who advised that if you advertise the ring, be careful not to allow anyone to trace to your residence. And watch out for scammers of all sorts. Verify any info they give you by contacting the school.

Whether or not you should keep the ring: If no legitimate claim to the ring is made, this means the ring is for you to keep.

I don't mean to belittle your find, (I would be really psyched if (and when) I find a ring like that!!) But here are a few facts for you to consider:

Most class rings are gold plated-not solid gold. So the amount of gold present in these rings is not high. Also, 10K gold is 39% gold.
If a legitimate claim is made for this ring, you will not be losing a lot of money/wealth by returning it to its owner.

Odds are that there will be no legit claim for this ring. (in my opinion). I think the emotional value of this ring is higher for you than the actual gold value. It would be for me!

NO WAY would I mail it to them. I figure that the girl or if she is underage, one of her parents, can call me and describe the ring. I would return it to the girl NOT the school. My brother in law just had that same thing happen here. He found a 2008 ring the night after they graduated. It has the girls name on it and he contacted the school. They want him to return the ring to the school. They said they would not contact the girl so I told him to forget about it and keep the darn thing. My gosh, you try to do the right thing and some people just won't let you but to just give it to them and hope for the best? NOPE! I don't have a problem returning something but to the right person.

See that. I had no idea it was plated or 39%gold. Learning lots already.Good luck with your infinium. So much for karma, I was trying to dry some water from my headphones,and pulled the foam part right off. This looks like its gonna be something similar to putting a tire on a rim.

BeachBuzz, I agree with Mumzie DO NOT MAIL THE RING TO THE SCHOOL!!! Give the school the girls initials and the year on the ring. Then give them your telephone number so she or one of her parents can contact you. You will not know for sure if she got the ring at all. Sometimes you can go onto the school website and look up graduates and find out for yourself her full name and then start making calls to locate her. I just don't trust administration at all. Best of all if you do locate her and can get her ring back to her is for you to get a picture of you returning her the ring. It will always be something you will have to remember about making someone's day bright. Those rings average between $200.00 to $500.00 or more depending how much stuff is put on them. I just paid $595.00 for my sons High School Graduation ring.

you may wait and call when school starts again because most of the people up there during summer are clueless and do not know what to do so they just told you that. When you call again ask for the school counselor or the librarian. Just explain that while metal detecting you found this ring and would like to return it to the owner. If they could look up the info and give the person a call for you and ask them to call you. Tell them that we try to locate all owners when it comes to class rings, military dog tags, or other items that we find that we might be able to find an owner for. We do this because we know what its like to loose something and what it would mean if someone ever took the time to track us down to return it. It makes the world a little nicer place.

you're trying to do the right thing by returning it, see how that pans out. As far as other rings,precious finds etc, I hunt the areas I do, more than once a month (playgrounds/parks) if someone comes up to me and asks, "Did you find a ring" my response is, "tell me what it looks like". If they hit on one I've found, I usually tell them I'll be back in an hour and show up with their property. If no one asks, It's MINE. :icon_sunny:

Not to start a war and not to be a smart butt but 10k is actually 41.7% gold. 10/24=. 41666666666666....yes I know it is close to 39% and doesn't make much of a difference. So please Massbaycolonist I'm not trying to offend you. And yes Massbaycolonist is correct, the amount if you were to sell it for scrap would not be much.

Try to contact the actual owner or have the school call her and have her contact you. If nothing happends keep it. Don't waste all of your potential detecting time on it. I sent emails to the school and to the girl that lost the ring that I found. I'm still waiting. I would recommend not to mail it in. It will end up being pawned or something and your good deed will go unnoticed.

Also as a side, 14k would be only 58% gold. 24k of course would be 100% pure gold.
