Newbie finds turn-of-the-century copper 1st time out!!!

So my buddy Mike, who's been lusting after my Ace 250 for some time now, calls me from the swap meet where he just bought a Garrett ADS Groundhog for $50. I was a bit skeptical since Garrett doesn't service that model anymore, and thought that MD would be heavy and bulky and not as effective.

We went out for our first hunt today.

Went to a fairly old local park, and after a short time learning to set it up right, he was off and running. His machine has manual ground balance, which was my first exposure to that feature, and I can see where it can be important in some situations. We had a great time even though it was cold and wet, and he found two pull tabs, a nail, a nickel, and three cents! WOO-HOO!!!

Neither one of us could see well enough to check the dates without our glasses, so when we got back, I whipped out my jewelers loupe. "OMG, Mike! This one's from the turn of the century!" You shoulda seen his face. "REALLY??!!" "Yeah," I said, "it's a '2000 D' !"

Well... we had a good time and it's great to have another buddy to go MD/TH'ing with. Hope everyone had a great summer. I've been without a computer for awhile, so I have some catching up to do.

old garretts r iff'y - got an old master Hunter - the old macines r great for "TF" 'round" steel pists in play grounds - but the newers r better for everything else - don't tell your friend till u show 'em your finds vs. his (get him hooked first)!

I know it's not that great of a machine compared to the new ones, but for $50, he coulda' done worse. I'm just happy he's got something of his own and he's excited to go MD'ing with me.

It was fun to tease him about it being a "the turn of the century" coin.... but I guess you had to be there
