I bought my first detector about a few weeks ago.I researched different brands and types.
I visited the Kelly co website to see all the various types of detectors, I also visited different forum pages just to get peoples opinions of the models they use.
I decided on the White's PrizumIV detector.I purchased locally.
After 5 days about 4 hours each day. I am up to $11.68 in found change.
I too, was itching to get out after I seen the first glimpse of grass protruding through the snow.My first time out, I went to a school lot nearby and examined the ground only to find frozen ground under 1" of mulch. That same day I went to a playground lot covered with sand again to find frozen ground after 2".
That first day taught me 2 things,I need rubber boots and patience.
My next day out I purchased a cheap garden spade, only to bend and break after a few spots dug.My very first find was a nickle. Not old ,mind you ,but just a nickle. The feeling that I got was like finding buried treasure!I was so excited, but my excitement turned to frustration after finding pulltabs, buried cans and bottle caps.
After another few days I tried my detector in different modes.Disc., sensitivity and the such.I am still learning about fine tuning but I feel that I pretty much have my machine dialed in.
I also have a pinpointer which I find is very helpful.I "probe" the area first before I actually dig.I have found many coins this way.No reason to dig a "divot" if I don't have to.
I have found a "lesche" type tool at the gardening section of a Meijer store near my house. It is Fiskars brand garden knife. What got me to buy this was the appearance resembles the lesches being sold on metal detection sites.I bought it for less than $10.00 and has a lifetime warranty.Although it doesn't come with a sheath,I am sure to find something that will both carry my pinpointer and "lesche" at a garage sale or thrift shop.
Another point I have discovered about metal detecting, why isn't there a duck, raccoon, dog poop target I.D.?
