Location
Chicago, Il
Detector(s) used
Minelab Etrac & Minelab Excal II
Figured I would make a quick post and introduce myself. I just got my first metal detector(Fisher F5) three weeks ago and I am absolutely hooked. I have always wanted one just never really committed. Man, am I glad that I did.

So far I have found about $10.00 in clad and a few relics. A religious pennant(I dont' think its silver), an old pocket flashlight, and a coat button.

I am out in Spring Grove so if anyone out this way is looking for anyone to hunt with I am game. I already met Pat from the Great Lake Historical Recovery club the other day. Great guy. Had fun chatting up and appreciated his insight into the location we were at.

Anyway, looking forward to meeting some of you in the future and putting a face to the names.

Dan

Welcome aboard, Dan! It's good to have another member!

You are right, Patrick is a great guy, and so is everyone else on our forum for that matter. ;D I'm in the AH area (Northwestern Cook Co.). We do a lot of hunting on our own or with a buddy or two, and also meet up for informal group hunts, too. Join in anytime!

Neil

Welcome aboard and your always welcome to join us on our hunts!!!

Welcome to the forum! As mentioned by others, you are welcome to join us on our hunts if you'd like. We are essentially our own little club, but without any commitments or dues. Hope to run into you one of these days.

Joe

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. It's nice to a see a group of people with a common interest so close knit. I am definately down if you guys ever get together for a hunt. Make sure to keep me in the loop. I have a few locations I have been researching out by me that would be great for a group hunt. I'll keep you informed if anything comes of them.

Thank you for the map DP Bob. I'll take a look at that more closely and see what I can come up with

Hey Pat, I think I'll make it a habit of caring some scooby snacks in my pouch just in case. I'll be back there for sure. Keep your eyes peeled and feel free to join me. ;D

@Treasurefiend. I was the one that contacted you through YouTube. Again, keep the Awesome videos coming. Maybe I'll eventually make an appearance in one!

Welcome Dan! I hear the F5 is a sweet machine!

Hey Dan, can't hit Morraine Hills, or Glacial or some of the other state parks up that way so stear clear, but I've hunted around there a good bit. Fairly certain I've left a lot of goods for you. See you up there one of these days. Usually make it up there hunting around every couple few weekends. Gonna be working parks around there again soon.

Watch out for Pat, he likes them mems!
(C'mon Pat, you're the one who cleaned them out at Mary Ayres Park after all, 75 under one tree)

So far I am loving the F5. Still learning the machine and thinking about getting the 11" DD coil that just came out for it.

I've already hit a couple of parks in Spring Grove as well as in the Wonder Lake area where my parents live. Just West of here is Hebron, Alden and Harvard which I have been researching. A couple of open fields that are for sale where old houses used to stand. Thinking of calling them up and seeing if I can get permission to hunt them.

Yeah I've been to those sites you've got in the pics Dan, for the most part noisy and naily. If you're not at the site at the time of demolition, it becomes fairly nasty once they spread the burnt debris around and takes years to settle down and become huntable. Burnt debris, especially bent nails and aluminum, are the bane of all old site hunters.

After 5 or more years of settling, the signals start to identify themselves more redily as individual targets instead of one huge mass of trash. With the F5 and the big DD coil you mave an edge though so if you can get the okay, go hit 'em. MCCD, the McHenry County Conservation District will tell you over the phone you cannot hunt in their preserves. They are particularly edgy around Marengo Ridge and Coral (both native village sites) but in most other sites they do not have a problem. I've hunted alongside their personnel in a few of them.
