Hi kids ~ I ran across this site trying to ID a type of stone; silly wonder of for use as field knife sharpening..blah blah.

I live in northern Illinois, say thirty clicks from the Wisconsin border/ been member of campsite near Burlington Wisconsin/ and am family member to 200 acres twixt say Mauston to Lyndon Station area; sloughs of Lemonweir River high and low lands. So I'm from what I've read my stopping grounds are of the "driftless area". ~~ Ancient sea/swamp?

~I've been looking for points/observing the ground since a lad. As late I've been distracted with plants of another story. But I could spend a day looking at stones 'n such in a washout anywhere. Funny thing is I've never been too successful.
Only by as in late I've realized by some as you fine folks I may have walked over a few things, not knowing what some tools/fine worked edges can be.
~ Lordy! Things I've seen in others collections get my neurons of past seen stuff I tossed gives me the willies.

Anyway, this is more of a thank you for members, and a fine site ~ Ifn I talk funny, I guess we can chalk it up to I got booted from school at sixteen. So no sense replying huh, nor What he say?

~~ Tries a coupla lame photos I shot random. Lame being it's only one angle...I did read of "Where's any wear", but what I don't understand is if something is Paleo, how is that Not worn off? ...as in first.
All are from near Burlington Wis., just kind of southwest of Kettle Moraine from what I gather.
~ I looked a bit and figured it may be a type of Nutter...should clean it yeah. It seems to have roadside tar.. and Paint? ...just the same.

Test~ near looks like I got logged out again. :(

Sorry of poor, to table focus.

I keep seeing this L shaped in same area (c'mon, I didn't mean daily). Funny to hear some may be arrow scrappers. One on right has that Hole notch...this is rocky farm land and was pretty much just looking for flint so I could play Daniel Boone fire maker. :)

I saved two because a pal o mine said to feel/look for a worked edge. Neither fit as I'd like to use. Maybe beat up...or fact them peeps were tough Sob's as our grandfathers/mothers.

One other I kept, and should take more angle photos of. I just thought it was too symmetrical to not be a tool.
Yeah..I've read of posts what Nature can do. Tri-angular to round made me keep it, even though not very ergonomic in hand.

One a friend gave me I thought was cool. ~ Odd how if ya didn't find it some of heart is missing.
I think it was as trade-ish gift for the fine teapot/creamer I gave to his wife. (sorry Grandma/Grandpa ~ we're maniacs and best to be used :) )

But wow. Could it be faked?

The first photo is a naturally occurring stone called an Omarolluk or omar for short. If it was an authentic artifact the hole would most likely be very smooth and located near the center of the stone. I have serious doubts about the double bitted raised groove axe, which is shown in the 4th photo, being authentic. The peck marks are all wrong and would have been ground off as the bits were sharpened. This one has the peck marks applied after the bits were sharpened. The pieces in the 2nd and 3rd photos could be something but it's kind of hard to tell without seeing them in person.

Thanks for your time Cachefind. Kind of odd about peck marks. I thought it was just age/corrosion. I'll have to ask my pal history of it.
I suppose if he dug it up he wouldn't have gave it away.

Omarolluk!? lol, I wonder if Canada wants their rock back. ~~ I should clean it up as they're pretty cool stones... Lime Away/toilet bowl cleaner and toothpaste ya think?

Sorry about the axe but it's an authentic fake, probably why your friend was willing to let it go so easily. Those omars are pretty cool stones and they use to fool me when I found them. Just clean it up with mild soap and an old toothbrush, lime away might take some of the natural color off.

Yeah CFzeroniner :) The tan part looks like built up nicotine stain-esque, when I thought the original was grey rock, which is why I thought of "stripping" it per se. ~~ And of stuffs read here/other places..the hole not perfect, it may have been used. But the ergo position in hand holds no wear on would would be working end(s).

I'm thinking I should take the Dremel to the axe and etch in "Kilroy Was Here" and date it, bury it somewhere fonts down. :)
Maybe in the state park nearby, who actually stole the the land thru condemnation...of a man's dream in the thirties. (sad story)

Ok, accordion :) to rules of nicety, I'll do it for ya.
Nice try, keep searching Bri!

I did get one of these last year for the silly reason bear and cougar has been sighted on/territory of Gramps old digs and I don't own a gun...can run faster than my other. :)

Cachefind and/or other ~~ May find this interesting since we were on the subject of Omarolluks.

I pulled this rock from the lake last eve thinking it would make a good rock to practice Field Sharpening my machete.
Off topic for Artifacts, and not expecting y'all are geologists but upon inspection this morn' I found that it had the beginning of Omarolluk rock? The ovular shapes x3 in the rock never finished boiling out or whatever it does?...just thinking, not really asking ~ I thought some may find it kinda cool to see.
The two left ovular shapes are recessed, far left one more so. (forgot a gauge in pic, stone support beneath is large palm size)
