Newbie wants to know........

Howdy folks,

I'm new to this forum, but have been reading your posts for the last week or so. I'm no stranger to coin collecting as I started when I was a kid, but I've been out of it for better than 20 years, other than snagging old/interesting coins from my pocket change.

I've accumulated close to 100 pounds of pennies that I've been saving since around 1984. I suspect that at least 1/3 of them are pre-1982. I also have a handfull of old nickles and a couple of old dimes and quarters.

I'm extremely interested in searching for silver half dollars. Just yesterday I stopped at the local branch of my bank to inquire. They told my that they don't stock them and won't order them unless I want to take $1000 worth. I can't do that, but will check some other banks.

Here's the deal: I would like to know what you guys do with your finds (other than collecting.) I'm most interested in how/where you dispose of the silver and copper coins.

I will most likely get back to collecting, but I'm not currently in a position to buy and hold coins. I'll need to buy and sell.

Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks very much.

Silver can easily be sold for a premium either on eBay or to local coin shops. As yet there isn't a viable means for selling pre-1982 pennies for their copper content. I consider myself equal parts collector/accumulator.

I have sold many of my 40% halves to a coin shop, but am saving all of my pre 1982 pennies and pre 1956 nickels. I really don't know of anyone who has sold their accumulated pre 1982 pennies, so I would not have any idea of how to dispose of them personally.

since copper hovers between $3.50 to $4.00 per POUND...there isn't much money to be made with pennys. I don't know how many pennys it takes to make a pound, but I would doubt that it would be profitable to sell (even if you could find a buyer) them by the pound. as one of the other members noted, you can sell 40% silver halves on ebay for a nice profit.
I only search for halves because of the value of silver. with dimes, you find so few silver coins that it isn't worth the effort. same with quarters...very slim chance to find silver.

As I understand it, all US coins were 90% silver before 1964, except Nickels and pennies of course. These 1943 steel pennies you gotta watch as I have a few that are copper.

40% halfs are actually 65-69. 1970 is 40% but only the proofs.

The 1964 JFK halves are 90% silver.
The ones that are 40% are
1965 thru 1970 all mint
Some of the 1976-S
Some of the S mint from 1992 to present.
A few 1974-D and 1977-D were struck in silver clad in error, if you're lucky enough to find one

Some S mint IKE dollare from 1971 to 1976 were 40% clad.
a few D mint IKEs from 74 and 77 were 40% clad in error

Also any of the Commemorative half dollars and dollars.

I believe there are 146 pre '82 pennies to the pound. Taking into account that some are worn down I think 150/lb would be about right.

Out of $100.00 yesterday I got two '64 halves----They looked almost uncirculated.
