Allright, I am not gonna lie, but I really just found out about coin roll hunting a couple weeks ago. Since then I have been itching to go by some rolls of coins. But first I want to be sure on a couple things. Is there a specific minimum amount of money they can exchange for, or can they give me say $50 worth of halves? Also, since I am not an adult, can I go on my own to get some, or do I need to have a parent there with me? (I have an account at the bank near me.)

Thanks,
Dihren

There really isn't a minimum amount you can ask for from what they have on-hand, but with halves you'll often find that the bank doesn't have any. If that is the case you'll have to ask them to order you a box, which is $500. Most banks won't order a full box for you unless you commit to buying the whole thing.

You should be able to get coins without a parent, especially if you are just exchanging cash for coin. If you are pulling the money out of a savings account it may be a different story. There are lots of minor hunters on this board, especially during the summer months.

Welcome!
Some banks may have $50 on hand, others may not. Usually you can find at least one half in each bank. Best bet is to order a box ($500) but most banks require you to order two boxes at a time. The order usually takes from two days to one week.

I'm sixteen and I have no problem getting or ordering coins at my main bank. Just be polite and don't be embarrassed like I was the first couple times.

If you want to do dimes, the boxes are $250 each and banks almost always have those on hand for their merchant business. Same with Nickels. With those, you can probably just to $50 at a time to get through the entire box if you have close access to a coin counter. And don't forget that local grocery stores often will take coins in many areas at their customer service counter. I recall cashing in several rolls of coins there when I was a younger. It didn't hurt that I was in a very small town and the store owners/operators knew my family.

Good luck out there!

Welcome to tnet. If you want to focus on halves and you only have $50 you are going to be looking for cwr and loose halves from the teller tray. If you are lucky enough to find a bank that has more then $50 in halves available you should take $50 search them and then bring them to your dump bank before going back for more. Repeat until you have cleaned them out. Remember it's very important not to take them back where you got them from. Good luck.

Just walk in, go to the teller and say "Do you have any half dollars today?" yes/no response "Do any of the other tellers have any? Or do you have any rolls hanging around?" If anyone asks, say "I collect coins."

To buy dime rolls, etc., just go to the teller and say "Can I have $50 in dimes, please?" Done and done.

Like others say, you may need to reroll to return them, or if the have a coin counting machine, just dump em in and buy more! If you must drop them off at the same bank, mark your rerolls with an x or something, and wait a day or two to buy more. With only $50 at a time, you shouldn't be much of a problem. Better to drop em somewhere else though.

Wow! Thanks for all the help and advice!! I am going to my local bank tomorrow to get some coins! Wish me luck! Since I am not willing to spend several hundred dollars (at least not yet) does anyone recommended a certain denomination I should get? Thanks!

I recently just found out about CRH too. i was watching World Famous Gold and Silver Pawn Stars and a guy brought in a 33k of silver quarters and I'm thinking.... Quarters were made of silver?!?!?! so i looked it up online and found out about CRH... I'm 14 years old and don't have a problem getting boxes of pennies, nickels, and dimes because the boxes are already in the safe. I don't even have an account there - the tellers there know me very well and wave to me every time i walk in. Im soon gonna start ordering halves just when i get a dump bank with a coin counter (TD)

Allright. Thanks! I am 14 too, so that is good to know. Yah I like Pawn Stars too. Do you suggest and denomination I should get more frequently? What do you think is the best to get? Or does it matter?

Best is halves, then dimes. I don't do nickels because you have to date check

Agree with jnb1994. For silver halves are best, then dimes. I wouldn't bother with quarters because they don't produce at all, and as noted nickels require you to date check (plus the war nickels are only 35% silver anyway). Also check for large dollar coins (not small dollars, i.e. presidential dollars or Susan B Anthony dollars) since occasionally you'll find morgan or peace dollars (90% silver), silver Ikes (there are a small number minted for collectors that are 40% silver), or even an American silver eagle (99.9% silver).

Although the nickels are heavier. A silver nickel I think is 1.30 ish worth of silver. A dime is right about 2 dollars. But nickels can't be rim checked or even checked by weight. You probably could use a ryedale but then again it's probably not worth getting one inless you're going to be using it for pennies too. Either way its a pretty big investment. And make sure you buy every loose or customer wrapped half and large dollar coin. You can really hit jackpots like solid rolls or old collections. I came across 7 morgan dollars and 10 peace dollars, bought for 17 bucks but they're worth about 600 bucks between silver value and numismatic value

Nickel has more like 1.50 actually. So for 10 cents of war nickels you get about 3 bucks of silver as opposed to 2 bucks worth with a silver dime

Dawg what's a coin roll hunting? Haven't you heard that they took out all da silver in da 80s :laughing7:

Im almost 16 and I now do a volume of almost $700-800 a week. Tellers order me boxes and give me halves. They know me by name. So the age wont matter unless your certain bank has a policy. Banks don't have a minumum. They usually have a maximum though :). I've walked in asking for $300 in nickels and got the weirdest look. Call ahead, or have them order you boxes. NEVER pay for rolls or boxes. Have your parent come (my dad is well known in the town so no one usually gives me trouble) and talk to the branch manager if the teller tries to charge you or wont order you boxes. Now if your getting like $4000.00 in Nickels or $10,000 in , then they may charge you something but if your doing $300-$400 a week, there shouldn't be a problem. One tip though DO NOT CASH IN YOUR COINS AT THE SAME BANK YOU PICK THEM UP AT. THIS PISSES OFF THE TELLERS AND SOMETIEMS YOULL GET YOUR SAME COINS BACK

Well I just got back from the bank. There wasn't much at the bank, but I got $7.50 worth of half dollars, $10.00 worth of quarters, and another $10.00 worth of dimes. I got 3 40% silver half dollars!!! No silver in the dimes, but there were also two bicentennial half dollar coins!! Pretty good! So happy about the silvers! Thanks to all of you for your advice and help. I am a bit annoyed with myself though, because I completely forgot to ask for pennies. Overall though, extremely pleased!!

the bicentennials arent worth more than face value unless they are proofs with an S mint mark.

I know, but they are still very cool. I am really just pleased with the silver.

Oh, you'll change your tune pretty quickly. They produced the bicentennial coins for two years (1975-76) so you will find tons of them. There are about twice as many if those as any other year. I even found $100 in CWRs that were all bicentennials.

I say this, but my wife still saves the bicentennial quarters.
