Early explorers of the area connected to the swift legend of the silver mines go all the way back to the DeSoto campaign into the Tennessee Valley in the 1500's. The early Cherokees told Desto's men about the silver in the area of Southwest Va/Kentucky area. Given the fault line along Pine Mountain, it is possible that small pockets of silver were pushed up to the surface many years ago when the Blue Ridge chains were created. There were known lead mine in this area, and I have found veins of quartz in places. Both can be indicators of other metals nearby. I have found iron, galena, quartz as I said, and many interesting other rocks at times. Just have to study the geology of the area you're in. It can save you alot of time.
