This week's half dollar box began with a 1967 ender and finished with a total of 23 silver coins -- all 40%.

I had a similar box a few years back with 26 silvers that were also just 40%.

I'd be willing to bet that whoever dumped those halves was blissfully ignorant of their silver content.

I'm going to have to try CRH. You never lose your initial investment and there is always a chance for some spectacular finds! There aren't many other things in life with that good of a guarantee.

Silver is really high right now, 40% halves are worth almost as much as 90% halves were just a year ago, so this is quite the massive score, congrats.

Have you (or anyone else in this forum) sold any 40% or 90% silver recently?

A teller at my bank had a few silver coins and she was surprised when I told her to go to the pawn shop down the street and sell them. I told her I thought she could get $6 or $7 each for the 1964 Kennedys and $3 or so for the 40% ones.

Is that about right?

I know how much silver is in each coin and what the spot silver price is. My question is how much are coin dealers / pawn shops BUYING 90% and 40% silver halves for. Every step along the way, dealers, middle men, and smelters have to make a profit.
There's a difference between those 2 also.
A PM dealer will have a closer margin.
In Toronto all the dealers go to the same smelter.
So the pawn shops are a bigger margin.
Some dealers will deal with places like KITCO.
10 points is the usually the spread.

Here is a reply back from my question on %.

On silver or gold Canadian Maples they are buying for right around spot price.
On scrap or pre-1966 Canadian coins it is around 5% under spot.
On any recognizable silver or gold bars they pay spot price.
There is about a $5.00-6.00 premium over spot price on silver Maples to purchase retail.
This is a rate from a coin dealer on the west coast of BC.

My wife and I were at a souvenir shop and a girl came in with 4 rolls of 64 Kennedys.
She said her grandpa left her those quarters and she wanted a $37 wind chime and wanted to know if she could pay with the quarters.
So she paid almost $900 for a $37 wind chime that he probably paid $5 for haha.
I thought I was on a hidden camera or something but it was for real.

Great finds, and halves are hard to come by these days. Congratulations.

I think I'm going to try for a box of half dollars...but I've run into issues when trying to get the bank to order them...v
