Hi folks. Summer's over. Thank God...too hot to hunt in Houston in the summer, unless you're a masochist. Three of my Houston buds (TXTim, Bazooka, SSEHunter) and I hit a park by the ship channel this morning. From the GE view I decided I was going to hunt a group of trees that were planted in two rows (possible former driveway or path) as it seemed to be the oldest undisturbed land. SSEHunter and I went into the trees while TXTim and Baz hit the main park grounds around the pool and pool bldg. Within the first 5 minutes I got a dime indication on the E-Trac (12-45) and it had some depth to it. The 1899O Barber dime popped out at 5 or 6 inches (was running the 15x12). I was doin' the dance, but I didn't realize that it was a nice date/mark.
This is stuff from modern parks over the past week (clad and junk)...
From today...
The $ guide from http://www.bestcoin.com/barber-dimes-1892-1916.htm says it is worth from $13 to $20,000, but it is probably at the $155 range (Thanks to TxTim for the heads-up on the value). Strike was 2,650,000.
"The Complete Guide To Certified Barber Coinage" by David & John Feigenbaum says "This year is similar to the 1898 issues. 1899-P comes well struck and is a common date. 1899-O however, is much scarcer than first realized, especially when one tries to find a decent strike."
