I dug this nice two cent coin in a young forest that was a farm until about the 1960s. It was initially sounding a mid-tone with a VDI of 19 on the Equinox, so I was expecting an Indian Head penny. As I dug my plug and rescanned the hole, it was giving a mixed high tone with a VDI around 22. This is the 1864 large motto coin, I believe, which is the most common coin of the issue, though certainly not common for me (only the second two cent piece I have ever found). While I guess most would prefer a key date from the 1870s, I really like finding Civil War era coins. The underlying coin is actually in very good shape, despite the appearance in the photo. I have given this a mechanical cleaning only using Andre's pencils. I am real tempted to give it a peroxide bath, but I'm afraid I will screw it up. Besides, the dirt actually highlights the detail and gives it some character. Thanks for checking out my post. Happy hunting!

I love the design on these coins. Looks like your coin is in great shape. I'd skip the peroxide bath. Quite nice as it sits. Cngrats!

Nice two center. Congrats.

Never used them but I read a lot of good things about Andre Pencils.
I cleaned a few Large Cents with Peroxide years ago - they came out nice and clean but the micro wave heated Peroxide also turned the coins BLACK !

Thanks. I appreciate the comments about peroxide. I am not going to use it on this one, though I may experiment on some other coppers. As for Andre pencils, I generally like them, though if the dirt is really caked-on, I still struggle removing, as the pencils seem to coat the surface with lead or whatever the pencils are made of. Maybe that's just me, as my cleaning skills stink. They are definitely a good tool to have though.

Soaking old Copper Coins in Olive Oil is always a safe way to go.
You might have to soak the coin for up to a month or so to get all the crud off.
Just take the coin out once a week or so and use a wood tooth pick on it.
Once the coin is cleaned up just rub some Paraffin Wax on it with your finger tips and wipe of the excess with a soft cloth.
The wax coating brings out more detail and protects - makes the coin look great !

Thanks for the cleaning tip. I might try that on some other coppers first, since I only have two of these two cent coins. I don't really mind the dirt on this one too much, especially on the obverse, as it seems to highlight some of the detail. However, a nice clean coin that would be display worthy is very tempting.

Great Find! :icon_thumright:
I'm VERY Envious, as that old coin is on my bucket list...!
