nickel searching question

I just picked up $100 CRW nickels from one of my pickup banks. The teller told me that an older man brought them in. The wrappers look aged a bit and some are marked "1964". I've searched a couple and it appears that this man collected these nickels sometime in the late 1980's because a lot of the 80's nickels are uncirculated. I don't think I'm going to find any pre 1960 nickels in this bunch because I assume the man knew enough not to let the keepers go. My question is, what could I be looking for? Should I check for full steps? Do any of you guys keep any specific nickels 1960-1989? I'm kind of at a loss because I usually only focus on pre 1960 nickels. Maybe now would be a good time to start an album post 1962. Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thanks, James
