No metal detecting excavators allowed

I called the parks department for a city in the next state over asking about an ordnance not allowing metal detecting in their park. The guy was real helpful. No ordanance but not allowed because their utilities are underground and all I would find is anything people lost. And no detecting on the riverbank because it belongs to the city, state, or is private property. I have the feeling he thought it involves a backhoe.

Supposed to be at least 12”-18” in CA. But such things have a tendency to work shallower as the earth moves over time.

just assure them you will call 811 before you dig . IT'S THE LAW.

Yep check on the ordinances even if you werent supposed to I dont think Ive heard of anyone getting a ticket or in trouble for detecting. Just do some research and if your not supposed to dont.

If it's not in writing, it's not a law. Many self important employees of government, making up their own laws.

Hi .Believe you still require a permit or written content to dig any sort of a hole in a public park. Duty of Care is a responsibility of all levels of the government and that authority will have a public liability insurance on the public area . There many of obscure laws that may used against you. Activity not mentioned does not mean that it is legal . Bullying your way round the with a glint of firearm steel doesn't mean anything .. TP

Most park rules always have an ordinance that prohibits digging and removal of plants. Some dim witted employee can always use it to tell you no. Many rural areas don't mind metal detecting if it is done responsibly. (Backfilling holes and removal of trash). Large cities like NYC, have a permit system. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Odds are that when you are told no or a local ordinance is passed it is because some idiot in the past has abused the site and left it trashed, didn't fill their holes or something similar.
