northern ohio axe, celt, and pestle

these are a few of my bigger pieces. pictured are a 3/4 grooved axe, a celt preform, and 1/2 of a roller pestle. the celt and pestle are from the same site. the 3/4 grooved axe was found about 1 mile to the east. the axe and pestle are from the archaic period. the axe has a flat top, and it has been suggested that this was used to accommodate a wedge for tightening the hafting.

nice hardstone artifacts.that axe is interesting.looks like it was heavily used.you are correct, the long flat areas on the sides of 3/4 and 1/2 grooved axes were used with shims to keep it hafted snug.would like to see some other pics if you got them,the poll end of that axe looks different to me than the common axe,or maybe just the angle of the pic.thanks for sharing the pics. :thumbsup:
