Not a good start to the day...

...when you get up in the morning and Matt Renoux with 9News Denver is doin a live weather report right outside your front door. At least I didn't have to go on the TV tellin what the tornado sounded like. They say we're on track to see one of those 100 year snowfall records for January. A-Basin ski area was evacuated and shut down yesterday due to avalanche concerns on the roads leading to it. I-70 is turning into the usual parking lot, but mostly due to avalanche problems. One thing you might not think about, but here in the High Country our fire hydrants stick up about 5 ft., still we get out and shovel them out as the city doesn't do that. I got this one around the corner from where I live. Good idea to shovel out gas meters, too.

I think all your snow storms have been visiting us afterwards! We're much higher than usual in snowfall for this time of year. I've been worried about how the winter season is gonna end, as that's when we normally get the biggest, baddest snow totals of the season!!

An old timer in Oklahoma told me his snow story about when his daughter ( she's probably 60 now ) was a baby, his wife sent him to the store for milk. He opened the front door and saw nothing but snow. The panhandle saw some major drifts back then he said. He went upstairs. climbed out onto the porch roof and jumper off. He had to tunnel through the snow about 10 ft away from the house to get to the truck so he could get to the store. He said if you broke down on the road, you didn't just abandon the vehicle because the drifts would cover it and snowplows would run it over because they couldn't see it.

Yep, that'd be some bad stuff. Saw a video some time back where the people had drifts up so high that they had to tunnel out the top of the front doorway. There was another pic that had snow so deep that they were getting in and out of their house through the upstairs window!!

A few years ago, I also recorded a show off of History Channel called Black Blizzard. It was about the great dust storms from back in the depression era. Some of the sand drifts shown were like the snow drifts we're talking about here, only if you opened the door, the wall would collapse into you.

That's called an Artic Cat. Thought everyone in Minnesota has at least two of those.

...And by the way, my snowmobile happens to have the mower deck still attached underneath!

Growin up in western Oklahoma, OD, I didn't see a lot of snowstorms, but due to the wind that we had I have seen drifts higher than a John Deere tractor from an 8" snow. Plus due to that wind and lack of snow removal equipment, the whole country might get shut down, but only for a day or two as it melted away pretty quick. Ice storms were killers though. I do not miss them at all. And for the record, tornadoes really do sound a whole lot like a freight train. I laugh when I hear those Okies sayin that on TV, but that would be the best way I could describe one too.
