My dad has found two 1844 and 1842 Canadian half pennies here in Ohio. The back of the penny says Bank of Montreal (I believe). They are about the same size as a large cent and when he dug them both our first thoughts were LARGE cent! But no

I dont think they are real valuable as far as monetary but they are memories and that is way cooler. Also my cousin was with me and caught it on video for a college project. Some history:
The Bank of Upper Canada was granted the right to mint copper one cent and half cent tokens. The coins (minted in 1850, 52, 54 and 57) show St George slaying the dragon on the obverse. The reverse has a complex set of devices. In the center, an anchor and sword cross a vertical Indian peace pipe. At the base, left and right are cornucopias. At the top right a British union jack is folded. A crown is top center. "R K & CO" is on the obverse (above the date under the hoof) for Rowe Kentish & Co, the agents who brokered the token deal. The coins are well made for the era, with deep strikes. They are often found well-circulated, an Unc being worth about 10 times a Fine. 3 million were minted in 1857, one year before the government of Canada started to mint 'official' coins.
