My first post! I bought a Tesoro Silver Umax the other day and had a chance to THing with my boys yesterday on my in-laws property. An old railroad bed. It was getting late and they finally had to tell me to turn it off on our way out of the area. Can anybody advise (or direct to a link) on a way to stabilize the iron objects? The kids want to keep the stakes. The small bullets are 22's and the penny is a 62-D with lead residue from a bullet. Not sure what the big plate with holes is, but I assume that its rr-related.

You will learn your machine, with practice,
and All will get better.
Welcome to TNET!!!

Welcome from the UK.

I use that machine as a back-up. Good at pin-pointing in trashy areas & finding any silver.

Buy an eletrolysis kit (they are cheap) for the iron.

Trial and error is how I learned my machine, or should I say, how I am learning my machine. :cat:

BK, you can wire brush the metal - a drill with a wire brush attachment works great. Also, as crusader mentioned, electrolysis works on smaller objects, unless you use a car battery. I've heard you can also throw the object in a firepit, this seems to cause the outer crust to loosen, then hit the object gently with a hammer. Sometimes I just hit the object with a hammer then wire brush. When they are done, I use mineral oil to keep them from rusting more. I have a lot of old iron that I've dug, I love it.

Thanks for the replies. I've relocated to NJ - Ft Dix area for a few weeks and just checked the messages. I will check out the electro option. Now I just have to find some NJ soil to dig up.
