Found this coin at the beach in Florida, rang a solid 92 on my Eqinox 900. Very heavy and some encrustation. Quater is for size comparison. Any help to identify or to find out if real greatly appreciated.

Looks like a plated copper / brass replica to me, the corrosion pattern matches that of zinc pennies I frequently find, and I see what looks like missing plating... what does it weigh?

I'm no expert on these things, but your upper left photo appears to have a cross similar to those on a Spanish COB. Judging from its' size next to your 2023 quarter, I would guess a large denomination like an 8 Reale. Blak bart should be able to give a good ID on this, and recommend the best way to clean it.

Yeah, I guess the weight and the desire to find something so neat blinded me, not real but I swing on in search of treasure. Will keep it as I enjoyed finding it on the dark beach that night. Thanks all for the help.

While a low mass may suggest a replica, a "looks like" assessment is not a definitive identification. Given that the VDI reading was 92, the composition warrants further consideration.

If the object is exceptionally light, aluminum is a likely candidate. However, a reading of 92 is also consistent with copper or silver, which is indicative of a genuine artifact rather than a reproduction. It may be premature to dismiss the find without confirming the exact material or weight.

Normally, I would agree with you, but there is a visible cast seam on the coin. That in conjunction with my previous observations, leads me to heavily lean towards replica. Regardless, it would be wise to get measurements, as it will help provide data to more easily distinguish it in the future.

VID 92 may be related to size, not weight. I do find a lot of the replicas, prob from Disney, but these are much smaller then 8 Reales. Weight key - light if replica and heavy if "Reale". Real Reale weighs about 27g, but given corrosion perhaps 22g or so. But still gets heart pounding.
