I found this item today at an Old Stage Stop, that has yielded other things from the 1870's era. I haven't attempted a good cleaning yet, but there doesn't seem to be any markings on it. As you can see in one of the Pics, something was attached to the bottom. Here are a few Pics, hopefully !

Wow ! I was thinking something that was worn around the neck, but it sure looks like that book clasp. Especially with the bevel on the back side of the hole, where it goes over the little button. Thanks guys !!
