where was your fathers friend from? that may help

He grew up in Smithfield, RI. He was born in 1928 and served in the Air Force after WWII. Don't know where he had his basic training, but did eventually end up in Montana.

From what my phone camera says its a aerial photograph of compound unit 731, a secret biological and chemical warfare research unit of the imperial Japanese army located in Harbin, Manchukuo (now China) during the second Sino-Japanese War and World War II.

can not be a military base. no gates or barriers across any of the incoming roads. photo could be from around the 1950's up to at least the early 70's. closer look at the cars they look to be from the 50's - 70's. just my guess.

Mystery solved! It was a pain to take out all the nails holding it in, but finally got the cardboard backing off. What a downer! Just a photo of the RI Medical Center. And it is stuck to the glass a little bit, so I didn't try to remove it.

One might be hard pressed to find anything Google Earth that resembles that photo today.

The State Hospital for Mental Health (historically known as the Rhode Island State Hospital for Mental Diseases) was located at the John O. Pastore Center (formerly known as the Howard complex) in Cranston, Rhode Island.
The historic hospital grounds and its many Colonial Revival buildings served as the primary state psychiatric facility for decades. Today, the campus continues to provide state psychiatric and medical care as part of the Eleanor Slater Hospital system, with the psychiatric division housed in the Roosevelt Benton facility.
