Masks are designed to stop bodily fluids from accidentally spilling into an open wound when undergoing surgery. They weren't designed to stop a virus.
Yes, most are designed to stop liquids and small solids. The masks are stopping the aerosols (airborne water droplets) that contain the virus, not the virus. Since this is a dosage based virus (the less you get initially, the less infected you become), a mask is worthwhile even if it stops only 25%-50% of the virus. Since a person sneezing or coughing or even talking or breathing produces very large aerosols at the source, a mask will be effective stopping most of it at the source, unless the mask is garbage. That is why they say wearing a mask is for others' protection, not yours.
There is plenty of actual science out there that demonstrates that masks reduce the spread. Whether you wish to google for it, or believe it, is up to you. I personally hold contempt for people who do not wear masks indoors. I agree with another poster who said not wearing a mask around others is selfish. Fortunately, where I live, mask compliance is over 99% indoors from what I've seen.
Claiming this state or that governor or such and such political party has a big virus problem is not science. Anyone can point out anything anecdotally to support their point, and anyone scientifically minded will ignore it, but you may convince alot of fools, and make the problem worse.
There are many countries without a virus problem. Some countries are virus free. Most have left-leaning, even extreme left leaning governments. What they have in common that matters is that they did aggressive lockdowns with 100% compliance, and 100% compliance on quarantine of incoming travelers.
In my judgment, the reason the US has 4% of the world population, but 20% of cases, is this "I'll do what I want" attitude as opposed to a "greater good" attitude in the successful countries. If you want cancer, fine, do what you want and smoke a carton a day. I don't care.
But, when it comes to your actions could make me sick, I do care, as do all the people who have died who got the virus from someone not wearing a mask. When I see someone not wearing a mask, I avoid them and give them a look of contempt, but most people do not do that. And they should not have to, IMHO.
Remember, science is about probabilities, not all or nothing absolutes. If a mask is somewhat effective, which the science has proven it is, at preventing a contagious, deadly disease, then it should be worn around others, out of respect for them.
