my first thought was that it may have fit inside the hole on the outhouse seat so that a young child didn't fall in.

It really looks like one of thouse things that hung over the chimney of an oil lamp to stop soot from marking the ceiling. and I agree with the idea of BB or slingshot practice making the marks also explaining why it was hidden in the privy.

My guess is the same as warsawdaddy, I say it's the lid of what
folks called a chamberpot or locally called a "thunder-pot". Maybe
the dents came from tapping it on the bottom to clean it out.

Almost looks like an insulator, but I doubt if they were made with any metal at all. Most are glass or ceramic entirely.

wagon wheel hub cover sounds good to me too. that would also explain the dents on the end. people tapping on it to get it of the wheel.
