looks like an old mark to me, for sure! See the active corrosion down in the mark? If he can carve a 6 with the tip of his lesche, then he should've been a silversmith!

Congratulations on on finding a hat check!!!!!!

According to Coin World, Large cents were a particular target [to counterstamping], because during the [late] 19th century, they were already used for so many other things, like gears, washers, tumblers in locks and as room, shoe or hatchecks. "In the latter cases each large cent was simply stamped with a number, a practice which goes a long way toward explaining the quantity of coins found with number stamps."
