Thanks. I have a couple more of these large beauties. A well respected collector in Ohio believes this may be one of the best. I disagree because Mr. Thomas might have a better one next door.

I find it interesting the human oils that are obviously embedded into these pieces.
I have to assume it all comes from recent times? I mean a tool mounted on a piece of wood wouldn't get touched that much under everyday use. Or is that dark shine not from oils?

Any insight?
 
I sure would like to have seen the original hafting and use back in the day... It's a monster!

The shine you see is just the areas of higher polish not likely oils from being handled by humans.
This polish on the bit could be from some use wear, or it could be high polish from simply being made properly.
The bit of an axe or celt wouldn't work without a nicely finished business end. See how completely this bit is polished?
