OK; here we go!
We all do it at one time or another and some of us time after time after time;
new model comes out from brand ( fill in to suit your own pocketbook ) that will do all but
wash the car or mow the grass for us. they can talk to us; sing to us, play silly little games,
and just about anything else you can think of. We want it to tell us how deep and what it is
with any number charts, maps, music, beeps ,bongs, a little Japanese voice that no one can
understand and after we have this triumph of engineering we take to the fields or beaches
parks, and home site's and promply switch it into ALL METAL and start digging up any and all
targets that our new detecting
wonder has JUST told us was a pull tab or what ever we have no use for and that we payed a
kings ransom for because it is suppose to have the worlds best TARGET ID!!!! Just what are
we spending our money for when we buy this new marvel? More depth ( to that pull tab it told
us was down there at fifteen inches ) ? That we dug up anyway! Maybe for some new kind of
battery that cost more than a tank of gas and last above as long? Now its computer interface so
you can send your buddy all the neat programs you came up with so HE can dig up those same
PULL TABS or nails that it ID's for him; that he don't believe any more than you did when it told
you what it was! Why do we do this to our selves??????????? Anyone out there with the answer
PLEASE SPEEK UP for all the rest of us nonbelievers so we can balance our check books with a
big smile on our face and sleep like a baby at night when we look at our balance after we write
that check for that new wonder that we already know we aren't going to believe any more than we
did the last one before it.

Hey I had one of those top of the lines that spoke...let me tell you one thing the WITCH LIES
I did not even last an hour before turning off the talk feature. A few months later I got rid of it completely.
I have a couple really good machines now, and I can finally tell what it is before I dig it up. That way I can smile and say yep, its a pull tab, I knew that. It doesn't stop me from drooling over new machines that come out and want them. I use to tell people my hobby was collecting metal detectors more than metal detecting.

It's like this there is always the ones that have the newest model out at no matter what cost. Then they find out it was no better than the one they had... BUT they fool and kid them selves that it is the greatest but deep down they know .." no better " but they spent all that money so time to fool themselves...And sometimes they really think it is better............ SO SAD...............................................==Jim_K==

Yes; but I still want to know why we are so willing to pay the money for them but know
befor we do ; that we are still going to hunt in A/M even befor we have it home, so all
those gee\gaws do/dads don't mean a thing do they!

If we believe everything we read we deserve what we get. Id is not the cure all and a pull tab at 15 inches could very well be a heavy gold ring.

As for all the dodads, we add accessories to our cars like XM radio, fancy wheel covers and heated seats. Why, cause we want them.

Well put Sandman, well put.

I'm guilty of wanting the latest and greatest detector, it's just like wanting the fastest computer or the coolest car, just fill in the blank.

Americans are great consumers of products, just turn on any TV commercial.

My Fisher F2 I bought this year as a backup (like I really needed one) taught me something.

It's fun to metal detect.

Part of those bells and whistles are things like depth gauge and ground balance. These are things that are really needed and you don't find them on the cheapest machines. And of course a decent coil that will go more than 2 inches deep.

Yes but you do not find a ...Depth gauge or Ground balance ... on Minelabs Sovereign or Excalibur detectors.......so you don't really need them i know i have a Sovereign.......And they are not cheap detectors..................................................==Jim_K==

Good replies one and all; maybe we need better coil acknowledge more that we need computer
interfacing and boxes that talk, etc, etc, etc. I have a 15x12" SEF on the way for the Sov. WE SHALL SEE.

My two favorite machines are more than 20 years old. Some of today's machines are impressive. But the thing that impresses me most is what's in the apron at the end of the hunt! TTC

When I go out hunting with my target id detectors I kinda challenge them, If it says its a quarter or a penny I'll dig it up to see if it was correct. To me that's what I find neat about using id machines, but make no mistake when it tells me its a pull tab and i don't dig it up to see if its wrong and i walk away I'm still thinking about what it could be. Some days i hunt using target id but my mind is in all metal mode and i will still dig up those so called junk targets, other days i don't feel like digging every hit, I would be wore out and not having fun! When these company's come out with new detectors they've got to add new things to attract buyers! just like everything else. As for the depth issues, I'm sure we are maxed out on depth by detectors due to the FCC regs of output power! It's just how the detector interpets the signal that it gets back, That's what we pay for.

When I started detecting in 1974, all the manufacturers were bragging about how deep their machines could detect. Every single year since then I have seen the claims from all of them how their units "Now go even deeper"!!! HMMMMMMMMMMM!

So, for the past 34 years, depth has been getting increasingly better. Yeah right!

I dug a 1750 Britannia out of a church yard with a Coinmaster 5000D back in '77. It gave a light but clean, repeating signal. It was compact soil and I had to cut through several small roots. The coin was found laying flat, and it left it's green stained impression in the hard soil. It was an honest 8" down.

So, if depth has improved each year with the latest models, then WOW! I gotta get one of those new ones!

But honestly, we shouldn't care so much about that. Consumers like to have the latest models. Look how long the car companies have been talking about improved gas mileage. There have been average improvements over the years, but like detectors, most of the improvements have come from better materials and advancements in stable electronics and more exacting tolerances.

If the new units make you feel like you have an advantage, then that is a good thing. In the end it will give you more confidence in yourself and your unit.

You hit on an interesting point...like the car industry, not all of those improvements are anything we will ever need or use. In the auto industry, ain't it Sweet to have a car that turns its lights on automatically when it gets dark, or climate-controls the temperature inside--or even (let's get back to the Very Basics here!) can roll down the windows with the touch of a button?

But, when all is said and done, we end up with a car that can't be driven in the dark one evening because the lights won't come on, or is freezing inside because the temperature sensor is out, or the windows won't go all the way up. ::) So how are these things Advancements?

People like to have the New Thing--whatever the New Thing is. But this is not just a matter of having "the best" (the newest) so that others will take notice. It seems more ingrained and personal than that... For example, you don't see too many detectorists giving each other "mad props" on the Brand Spanking New model fill-in-the-blank that they just bought. It is psychological--that addiction for the newest thing. Folks will Admire a car--especially a really unusual, vintage, or new trendy one... I don't know about You, but I don't see too many random folks coming up and admiring my detector!

Now here's the odd thing--always having to have the Newest car won't affect your driving for very long. You'll get used to it pretty quickly. But always having to get the newest machine on the market WILL affect your hunting, because you'll spend very little time really Learning a machine in the first place!

I've had the same model detector for 16 years now and counting--and I feel certain that despite any real or merely perceived inadequacies of decade-and-a-half-old technology, my familiarity with the model will More than make up for that.

I THOUGHT the DFX would be an improvement over my older Whites 6000, series2. It was in the aspect of ID'ing things...but I still dig pull tabs and bottle caps. Until I've used it as much as my other detectors and know it's every quirk and blip.....I wont trust the displays.

I did buy another 6000di pro because I know what I found with it and from what I've read...no other machine is really any better. I'm sort of at a cross roads right now on whether I want to even keep the dfx....it's an awfully expensive back-up detector.

Only problem I have now is arthritis setting in rapidly and using the 6000 is taking it's toll on my wrists. I have to keep switching hands back and forth every 5 or 10 minutes. The DFX is definately lighter and more ergonomic. That is an important feature for some of us.

Deepskyal,

I cut my teeth on the diPro. Recommend you try the Tesoro uMax, it's light and deep. Really nice machine. The diPro is heavy for even the young 'uns.

why? because i read every review, watched every video, kept up with the forums, asked questions, paced backand forth gnawing nails, worked overtime, dreamed about it, rolled pennies.........after a month and a half, just sent off for it. ordered thurs, was in the mail monday. have only had time to read the manual and power it up a couple times, but the weeekend isn't far off so i'll see then if it lives up to the hype. HH everyyone

RigDean--good to hear from you, and an excellent reply. We are in some ways funneled into these choices and narrow options... Kinda like voting for that one guy or that other guy in November...
