Killer coins, Romeo! You and your buds make this forum a great place to dwell! :icon_sunny:

Here is my favorite Colonial coin: a 1781 half real. I also found a 1791 one real in similar condition last year.

Great coins Kyle and Romeo :icon_thumleft: ... I don't have many to choose from so they're all my favorite.. ;D

Here it goes
pic 1 & 2- 1731 KG II & 1749 KG II halfpennies (note the facial difference, he's younger on the left :laughing7: )
pic 3 & 4- bent 1789 one reale
pic 5 & 6- 1/4 piece of KG II halfpenny & 1806 half reale (did a great job cleaning the back of the KG heh? :laughing9: )
pic 7- (2) 1/4 pieces of 2 reales
pic 8- 1/2 piece of 1733 one reale & 1/4 piece of 1 reale
pic 9- my only 17th century coin :headbang:

I've never found a Charles II, not even a William and Mary for that matter. For British coppers it seems like William III is the cut-off and even he's a pretty scarce dude to show up. Never a cut real either! Jeeze do we find anything worth while around here. :-\

;D

Here's the pics I have saved.

You've done very well but you're not really new to detecting anymore, so I guess them adding up is now starting to make sense. How many years has it been for you? There's no question your start was much faster than mine, but just for silver though. I think it was about year three through five where my numbers really increased, but then after that pretty slow with just one or two a year. But even just one here, one there do add up.

why do you think im gonna move to this area of virginia when i get out of the navy  (my pard has at least 25-30 spanish silver this year although only one is cut.. 1/4 piece of a 2 reale he found the same day as I found one of mine) .. he did get to hunt the whole year though too :laughing9: I know, excuses excuses excuses

The guys I have seen online with the most Spanish have been from VA. It's certainly a great detecting state for both Colonial and CW!

You make up for a lot in the large amounts of military buttons you guys up there in Canada dig. My buddy, Steve in PA, has only dug 8 Rev War buttons in his career and you have probably close to 100. I'm envious of that, IP. I will be lucky to dig 5 Rev War buttons in my whole career. I figure I have well over 40 years left, too. :'( I'm not going to cry too much, because I sure love to dig these coppers and occasional Spanish silver. I know something very rare, such as a Birch Cent, will show up underneath my coil some day. :help:

Those cobs are sweet, IP. I hope to find one some day. We are going to venture into some 1720s-30s sites in the near future, so the chances are there. :dontknow:

Umrgolf, I love those cut silvers. Get back from the Navy, and pound your property stakes into the ground...in good ole VA!! :headbang: You'll be finding many more there, so get yourself prepared.

Kyle

All my cobs have come from our earliest sites and not once did one pop up with later coins, so 1720s/30s sites would be prime for sure. Since you find many early coppers and milled reales it's simply just a matter of time.

Four years for me now...If I can get three early silvers a year I will be happy. Funny thing is that each year I have been hunting I have found Spanish Silver...

Year One - 1798 eight reale
Year Two - 1784 one reale
Year Three - 1774 eight reale
Year Four 172? two reale

Throw in a few early Frenchies and a smattering of older British silvers and I can look back fondly!

You'll have to pick it up because I'm closer to 2 per year on average. I must have had a couple years with three or four, because recently it has been just one, and maybe one year shut out completely. I think my 8 reale was also my first Spanish.

Yes indeed, I can walk to the exact location probably within a foot of where I found all my "quality" finds .. (of course quality for me is under a different section of the dictionary than for you) :laughing9:

How's this for quality?

Nah...I'll be content if I can keep hitting one Spanish per year...and an eight reale every two years...I'm due for another eight in 2010!! Threepeat!

Maybe the one Spanish per year but you definitely won't dig an 8 every two years. I'd say shooting for two more 8s in the next 20 years would be more reale-istic.

I'd like a nicer one but it's well down my want list. I'd much rather something different that you can't just buy any given day of the week.

They didn't use any coins in the fur trade! :'(
I got a few but they're nothing compared to ones on this thread.
:icon_thumright: VERY NICE FINDS EVERYONE! :notworthy: :hello2: :notworthy:
Dave.

Ok, it isn't much and she's scarred up to smithereens...but this is so far my best (and only) colonial copper. A 1787 Connecticut. This is my first year detecting and I'm very grateful to have actually pulled 8 coppers this year. But this was the only 18th century. Unless you want to count my 1800/79 overlaid Draped Bust. Spring is just around the corner and hopefully this next year I'll pull some more state coins or even a spanish silver.

I like the MA copper too, as well as everything else, but the first type of Hibernia is very uncommon to find.

You keep digging at places like that and I see a tree coin in your future.

Killer coins there, Brian. I'm really looking forward to you posting your finds in 2010. You must and you will...or else I'll gather up a bunch of Colonial hunters and we'll make our way to MA and force you to. :laughing9: Just kidding. :laughing9: Make yourself at home here, Brian, and you'll see there are many Colonial hunters just like you who would love to see your artifacts.

Kyle
