You don't find bills this old still in circulation too often.

pretty unusual to see any United States Notes (red seal) show up in circulation any more, but the poor economy is causing some people to spend their old money as well as some of it gets stolen and spent. either way, it's yours now.

It's possible little junior raided his parent's collection. I got an old $20 bill in change last year (it was a series in the 20s or 30s). Was excited! Checked ebay completed auctions and saw a similar one sell for something like $22 delivered. Well, after 13%+ for ebay/paypal fees, and a buck for shipping, the guy netted LESS THAN $20 for a $20 bill. It went right back into circulation. But a $20 gold coin from that same era... worth quite a bit more. Paper or gold? Hmmmm....

A woman was trying to sell her $1 silver certificates at the coin/bill/stamp shop in my town, and the owner said,"They are only worth face value, so spend them somewhere." Sadly, I had no bills to exchange.
