Old axe head - Need info!

Does anyone know about this style axe head?
I found it metal detecting at an abandoned town in Vermont that was colonized in the late 1700s. The town was split up in 1855.
It feels more like stone than metal. It measures 6-1/4 inches long.

Not an axe person, but from looking at the pictures your axe head it looks like something I saw on History or Discovery Channel. The show demonstrated how the smith used iron or low carbon steel for the main body and folded it over and then forge welded a steel insert for the leading edge so that the axe would hold up better and take a sharper hone.

That may or may not be what you actually have, but the color and material differences on your axe head made me think of it.
