I found this ring detecting an old site in NC. I put the topic on the what is it section of this site. Ive been told it could be as old as the civil war because the "g" is missing from the compasses on the masonic logo. If you any info to give me on this we would love to know more. sincerely mike and Maggie

Thank you texastee! wrote: Hi Sage...I knew with a little time I could find something out for you on your Masonic ring...Looks like it is from before 1850. Here is a website I use often as a Mason can not revell anything about Masonry so I go on line a lot to see what is going on. The website is http://www.phoenexmasonry.org/the_g_in_masonrys_emblem.htm You might be able to just type in Phoenix Masonry and bypass all the typing. It looks like they didn't use the G till 1850 so your ring is old indeed. Maybe Washington lost it when he was chopping down the cherry tree? There is some kind of history there. Good luck, try finding out who all owned the home in the 1800's or......earlier.

NICE FIND.CONGRATS.

very neat... my great grandfather was a mason for over 60 yrs...... cool digs man!

Very old masonic ring

I found a very old masonic ring, in a Mozambican beach.
The "G" doesn't appear, so maybe it's older than 1850.

Do you know anyone that might be interested?

very high in the cool factor, other than that, awesome ring

If I were you, I'd post several pictures in the "What is it?" forum and there might be someone who would know.

In English freemasonry, the G doesn't appear between the square and compasses.

Having the "G" or not having it isn't necessarily a reliable indicator of age. The "G" has been in at least very limited use since the 1700's in English speaking lodges. However, it is very uncommon in the UK. It is common in the US but isn't universally used. (Mainly for stylistic reasons or the substitution of other symbology such as the All Seeing Eye.)

great ring. Tempting to get that one fixed.......
