8)Hello! I'm new here and love this page!!! I lived in Towanda Pa. many years ago,now in Oregon.I wanted to share this to anyone in Pa or near Towanda. This location maybe a good place to look (detect). This may be unknown to alot of people but here goes .There is a island between the main town (Towanda) and the other side of the river that goes to Wysox. The old bridge that used to be there is now gone but you can see where it used to be.The island that is shaped like a arrow head was used by my Greatgrandfather(Bacon) for a gathering place for people to come in the summer time. This was way back in the late 1800,s and early 1900,s.They used to have people go to the island in small boats for different gatherings(Picnics, weddings, parties, etc.)I don't know how many years they did that but it must have been several,as they had small picnic sites built there.I don't know if he owned the land or leased it, but my sister has alot of the old history about the place. You can maybe go to a site in early Towanda history and find out more.I hope this will be of value to you.PS try the google map and go to Towanda Pa.

is it along TABLE ROCK MOUNTAIN ?

8)Hello Jeff, Yes this is the place. That old card is showing the R&R crossing up river from my post.Part of the island in the card may be the island, There are about 3-4 islands at the base of table rock..

Towanda is So Historic.

"Sullivan Expidition" "French Azilum" Etc.

I could post so many Pics it would take Days ;D

Wish I lived Closer.

THANKS ! Will give someone a Lead.

JEFF

Mapquest has a pretty good image of one of the arrowhead looking islands. So walking across to the island is out of the question? Is that a shallow portion maybe?

Ironically, i was at the site you speak of very recently...I read about the site in an old (1930s) issue of Pennsylvania archaeology....I was really looking for old native american stone firing pits that the magazine said were still there...Of course that was 80 or so years ago, there are no signs of them any longer..I didn`t stay long as it started to rain and i was unaware of course regarding your particular story....

I was born and raised a stones throw fromSPANISH HILL and have known DEB TWIGG (www.spanishhill.com) my entire life....We graduated together from Sayre High in 1981..
Unfortunately, i am more of a finder keeper while she believes the proper "experts" should be notified
immediately so they can do a professional excavation......Most recently, i found a rock with a bird carving on it and a small stone head that may have been a part of a pipe...Both were right on the surface a few hundred yards south of SPANISH HILL..Priot to that i found a large piece of pottery and a fist sized stone with a hole drilled through it.....

I had a nice collection started when i was a kid growing up, but it all was lost from years of moving and general disregard i suppose..I have only been out twice now over the last year or so as my interest has been re-kindled in this area...There are several other areas that i know of within a few miles of the hill that are very, very well worth re-visiting also....I don`t have a detector or anything but i guess i should start looking for one.....gotta go for now....Jeff, if you want to e-mail me:bodine1racer@yahoo.com..Maybe you would be interested in spending a day up here in the spring???

8)Deepsky, its been alot of years since I've been back to Towanda, and I would say you can't walk accross the islands, maybe in low water during summer. Also the many big floods may have wash items off the islands, and also wash items up on the island.Oh!!! another small note, The rocks at the top of "Table rock" are a site you may want to go look at,I heard long ago that the Indian people in that area use to camp up there and left some carved marks in the stones.

;D ;DHi Tom,Table rock as you may have seen is beautiful to look at. I lived in Towanda many moons ago(class of 1965).I have been up there many times and It seems there are alot large slate rock outcroppings running along the complete ridge.Over the years, many people from Towanda and other places use to go up there for the view. The only roads up there are on the Wysox side of the river.I have seen old writings on some of the rocks. But also alot of people wrote their names on the stones from recent times. As I said before the name Towanda is from a old Indian culture meaning "Burial of the Dead" I don't know what tribe of Indians tho.Its to steep to walk up from the river to the top, but some people have done it in the past. There is a power line that runs the complete length, and it may be acceslibe to the public??? A friend of mine still in Towanda took us up there back in 1990.Try to "Mapquest" the mountain, and it will show the roads up to the top. Also, there is a newer park on the Wysox side of the river that used to be a old ball field and family picinic place. It was used for alot of years before thay put in the new bridge accross the river. Hope this is useful. Idig

if I'm not mistaken, and I probably am, it was the Alagonquin Indians that were in that section of Pa. My dad was raised in Haddok, in Carbon County and one of my few recollections of being young, involves going to a place called the "indian chair". It was on the side of a mountain within walking distance of Haddock, along the railroad tracks and then into the woods. I'm gonna write and ask him the location of that. I also remember him showing me how to catch fish with your hands in a small creek in the same area. He told me his Indian friends showed him how to do that. I'm 56 now and he was probably 27 or 30 when this all went on.

I'm thinking you would probably have to canoe over to the island, the water is probably 6-10 feet deep. Sounds like a great place to do a hunt, granted I'm a few hours away (Warren, Co). I know that there were areas here in Warren that were the same as far as the islands are concerned. There are still picnic table on some of them from when people would cross an picnic.

;D Found this early photo of Towanda, the island on the card is the one my G-Grandfather use to lease or own?? and had functions on the island. The old wooden bridge?? I never knew it was there? Thers got to be some goddies on that island, but I'm in Oregon and can't get back there!!! Maybe JeffPa can check it out, he doesn't live that far.

hey all...i go to Towanda a few times a year, My wifes family is from that area as a matter of fact I raft down the river every year for 15 years now. We start in Towanda go past Standing Stone and end below Terrytown...I never realized all the history in the area until just recently. The site you talk about is interesting but how would you locate the island there are so many..? could you show me on a sat. photo?...Thanks TnT

;D Hello there. I'm sorry, but I don't know how to mark and paste a Sat picture. But if you have Mapquest, pan over to Towanda, zoom close and if you know where the old bridge went accross the river.you'll see a island that is round at the north part and comes to a point at the south of the island.Thats the one.On the east side of the island there are some long rock outcroppings that follow the island.Any question let me know. I'm going to try and figure out how to mark a Sat map, and if I can, I send it to this page, Idig

Hi T2000, that was a good link, and yes you hit the island I was talking about.I don't live in Towanda anymore, but still have some friends there.I was born in Sayre, raised in Towanda, and Fla.Graduated from Towanda 1965 and now live in Oregon(since 1972)Try to get up on table rock, its a great view and there are old writings on the slate rock formations. The park by the island used to be a old baseball and picnic area, might find some stuff there!!! Hope this helps, Idig ;D
