🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Old brass woodworking punches?

This came from an old carpenter’s tool chest I believe. It’s roughly 4” wide and 4” tall with a slip-on wooden cap. The medal ‘punches’ are brass.

For the life of me I can’t imagine where a punch would be used on wood. Are ya sure those weren’t for leather?

That’s the thing, dad (87) insists these came from his grandfather‘s woodworking chest, I’m almost certain that they did.

I can understand that but I have a can opener in my hunting bag but Im not going to shoot squirrels with it.
I hope they are what you think they are but I’m just not seeing a purpose for woodworking.

I've seen wood punches before, but normally they're used for texturing and those all just look smooth. What do the other ends look like?

could you lay them out on the table and get a few pictures from different angles. Do they appear to be the same in length and thickness?

I say this because some are same shape... such as triangles... that are different thicknesses... if they were punches or the like that would be "hit"... they would all be the same thickness.

More pics would help. Leaning towards detail wood scrapers at the moment. Tools you'd use to make carved beads and such into wood.

Probably wood working punches for inside a sulfur mine I have hammers,saws,drill bits nd punches. (They won't spark)

Obviously the patterns aren't punches, but the longer pins could well be. I suspect the other pieces are inlay templates.
