Hello, I am looking for insight to what I believe is an older era button. I found this button on some property that predates the civil war. I was told by the property oversight that one of the old structures was thought to have housed slaves. I found this button between this old house and another one on this property. The button is made of some brass or copper alloy and I believe I have made out what I believe is the letter T on the back. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

if there is a T, then probably from the lettering "GILT" on it.
