Found this coin-like item and would like to know if anyone can identify it. I tried to zoom in the best I could. There is some type of marking on the "front" of the coin, but I can't make anything out of the "back" due to pitting. Thanks for all information.
Hi; Another suggestion is to send it to a Pro Service like PCGS and have them ID it. Then you would have an Authenticity Certificate, Grading and a true ID on it. Another thing is GET BACK TO WHERE YOU FOUND IT ASAP !!!! There may be more there. Kill your Discrimination and dig EVERYTHING.!!! PEACE:RONB
This is a find for the books for sure.
I'm with Don. I suspect a 17th C Maravedis. But those coins were poorly struck and mess when they were new. Add counter strikes and a couple centuries in the ground and... Well... Good luck...
Can you post another pic or two with the coin on a medium dark background in natural light? Not straight on shots but almost - with just a slight angle - similar to your first pic. I'll try to photoshop it to get a little more detail.
I'm afraid there is not enough detail remaining on the coin for a full ID, it does look as there is part off the hind quarters of a horse/bull or something similar, but there are a lot of Ancient Bronze coins that could fit that description.
I go with several others here - I would say a 4 Maravedi Spanish coin from the early 17th century. The little detail remaining looks like part of a shield or coat of arms. (It is definitely not British.) See Krause 17th century Spain KM#24 (page 1007 in my 1996 edition).
I can't see anything Portuguese looking close. French - either state or provincial is another possibility but Krause has few pictures of these and I cannot see a match so far.
PS. If it is a 4 Maravedi coin as described, in this condition it is virtually worthless numismatically. Far more interesting and valuable would be finding out how it got to where you found it and when!
