I stop by this new site I researched for the first time and found this old copper coin. The first pic is how it look when it first cam out of the ground. I could not tell what it was but I knew it was old. I brought it home and washed it off got most of the thick crust off. There is a thin layer that chipped off on the edges. What is the best way to clean that off? Just pick it off, soak it chemical? I don't want to scrub it off and damage the coin. This is by fare the oldest coin I've ever found metal detecting. Oldest I'm found is 1914 wheat penny. I'm not sure what this coin is and can't see a date on it. On the side that has the head looks like it says " George" would that be king George or George Washington. I'm going to do some research on Tnet but wanted to post picture first.

Nice find, keep us posted

I don't know. Everyone says don't clean it if you think it's really worth something. Can you make out a date? Get one of those lighted magnifiers.

Nice old copper! Looks like a Woods Hibernia Halfpenny to me.

Just boil some peroxide in the mic

Microwave for 50sec and drop it in..keep doing it till it stops fizzing. .

yes it is, and date should be readable as I can see it fairly well even in those pics. (likely 1723)

What is the diameter? It seems to have an unusally large bust.

cold soapy water, pat dry.

Nice Hibernia. If this is your first 1700's coin, huge congrats! A hot peroxide bath will clean it up nice.

Now the question is to clean or not to clean?

Did you see my post?? Trust me peroxide will not hurt it....after ur done coat it with some mineral oil..

Congrats on the colonial copper!

Great find! Thanks for sharing...

Peroxide. Only leave it in until the dirt is gone. Watch for flaking. If detail starts to flake away, then remove it immediately. Simply microwave normal over-the-counter peroxide till boiling in microwave and drop the coin in. Once it's done, soak in distilled water for 24 hours and apply some blue ribbon coin conditioner to the surface of the coin. Should come out nicely, and post a photo when done. Any questions, PM Don in SJ. He is a copper cleaning MASTER.

Cheers,

Buck
