I tried this old field that we have done for years because it was still in stubble & it was close for me to cycle to. I started with very few expectations but within 2 hours I knew it was becoming another great day. I spent 4.5 hours (Dad joined me for the last 1 hour 45mins) detecting. Sometimes it's the small things that make all the difference & as Dad was not with me I gridded the opposite direction to the stubble lines, using my footprints as a guide. Dad finds doing straight lines more difficult without running with the crops & using our trusty flags as markers. Therefore, the finds I got were a direct result of this change of tactic.

Roman Roof Tile piece
11 Scrappies
2 Lead Tokens
Jetton
Lead Cloth Seal
Medieval Leather Mount
Interesting Medieval Gilt Buckle with 2 opposing Birds
Cool Lion watch Winder
Ed I Hammered Penny - Canterbury Mint
AD 383-408 Arcadius Siliqua - rated as Scarce:headbang:

Lastly a very interesting Gaming Piece that when I found it I thought Viking because of the silver inlaided runic letter. However the runic letter seems to be a 'H' from the germanic elder futhark 2nd-8th C which would make it a Saxon Migration period piece. I need to do more research but I think the 'H' is for Hnefi which is the King Piece of the board game. I think this trumps my nice siliqua as the days best find!

Great finds Cru! That game piece is very cool

Unbelievable Man ! I'm trying to think of what a comparable day would be over here ?

Love the hammered silver, but that inlaid bronze piece is something very special. I will be most interested in any updates or additional information you might come across regarding the item. What are the dimensions/weight of the piece, and what game do you postulate it was used in? Splendid haul as usual and many thanks for sharing!

Great silvers!!!

Awesome finds. That Roman siliqua is very cool.

Siliqua, hammereds, ancient game piece, ...... even by UK standards I would have to say that was an exceptional hunt :icon_thumleft:

Have a read of the above.

You find some awesome coins and relics

That watch winder must be of the very earliest type ?
Congrats on the game piece, that is one cool find.
For sure going in a different direction can make an old site new.

When you say great day, we can be sure of something very cool, and it was.

I'm thinking finding 4 GW buttons, a pocket spill of chain cents, a roll of 1877 Indian Heads, and seeing Bigfoot, Elvis, and Jim Morrison playing cribbage. :laughing7:

Really cool finds crusader, you guys across the pond sure get some old finds... how deep are coins for 400 AD anyway?

Beautiful assortment of finds. That Saxon piece is pretty exciting.

Beautiful silvers, and I agree that the game piece could be the find of the hunt. Will be hoping that more information will come to light.

Congratulations on an excellent hunt.

I haven't seen another one, but I'm pretty sure the winder is 18th C.

In ploughed soil they are often on the top.

UPDATE:

I emailed the leading UK dealer who specialises in Saxon/Viking finds & he somewhat agreed with my assessment:

''You may be right but not a pretty item unfortunately, so probably difficult to sell''

I wasn't even thinking of selling.
