Who ever this is ...they have a very distinctive moustache....I dont think men change the shape of their mustaches much ...so need to use that as a clue

Can you make a rubbing of the badge? I would like to see where you are getting 'Castle "

Re: old "for prisedent" thingy

Okay, since I mentioned the (probably quite remote) possibility that it might be related to the 1900 "Draft Dewey" presidential nomination fervor, here's Admiral George Dewey, hero of the Spanish-American War, moustache and shoulder straps and all:

(But let's stop before we get to Groucho Marx and Yosemite Sam! ::))

I think you've nailed it, PBK. I've been looking at pics for an hour, yours is the closest. Kind of hard to tell with the corrosion on the piece.

I don't know, DM. I'm not ready to say that's who it is. I just mentioned Dewey as someone who looked similar and was sought as a candidate in 1900. There are, of course, tons of Dewey patriotic badges, medals, etc. from 1898, and those are what led me to make the comparison. Anyway, as you say, there is a definite resemblance.

Sorry... could not let it go! I think Dewey is the best candidate yet...

Well, to be honest, Jim, neither could I, even though I tried to downplay it earlier— and of course DM said the same after I posted the photo of Dewey. The fact that the badge was made of aluminum and therefore probably not a lot earlier than 1900 was another convincing clue. And you know what? We were right! I just received the following e-mail from Rex Stark, a specialist in political memorabilia:

This was issued to promote Admiral George Dewey (naval hero of the Spanish-American War) for President in 1900. He was never actually a serious candidate. I have had several of these - while it is not rare, it certainly is quite scarce. In excellent condition it would be worth $100-150. Unfortunately, the condition of this one is terrible. I think it would be impossible to sell...

I like it anyway! In fact, I think it's a terrific little piece of history, and it gave us a good chase, too. That's what great finds are all about!

Re: old "for prisedent" thingy

Here is a picture of a metal thing that I posted a couple years ago. The concensus at that time was that it might be Admiral Dewey.
The back of mine said "patent applied for".
