He looks really familiar. There was a former vice president, John C. Breckinridge, who was a general during the Civil War for the Confederecy. I know of him thru local history here. He won a battle near me.

Does it say Baltimore at the bottom of the back??

My best guess was "our hero" for president... but I googled a bunch of stuff and came with nothing. I assumed he was a general, but I don't recognize him. :-\

WHOA!

Let's back up here! I guess it must have been Digginman's reference to Breckinridge, but for some reason I just assumed from the earlier posts that that's who it was. However, a closer look indicates that the name is nowhere to be found on the badge. The portrait does resemble some wartime images of Breckinridge, like this one:
General_John_Breckenridge.jpg

However, I should have thrown on the brakes when Gypsy posted that medalet. That's how Breckinridge looked when he ran for president.. not as he does in the photo above. The big moustache and uniform came later.

Back to square one!

You are right, PBK, but he still looks familiar.

Good catch, Gypsy.

Actually, DM, it looks a bit like Gen. McClellan, who ran for President in 1864.

Then again, it also looks sort of like Admiral Dewey, who was briefly but enthusiastically "courted" for the presidential nomination in 1900.

It might help to know what the metal is. It's probably "white metal" alloy, but if it happens to be aluminum, that would definitely push the date ahead to 1888 or later.

I've sent the photos to a couple of political memorabilia experts, so maybe at least one of them will come through.

True, Jim. The only problem is, that's not how Breckinridge looked in 1860, when he ran for President. This is how he looked at that time:

I think I'd leave it as is. If it is aluminum, once it oxidizes ("rusts") there's usually not much you can do to improve it. When the crud comes off, there will probably just be pitting underneath, the way it is on the upper right corner now. Also, when fairly thin metal oxidizes, it can get very brittle, and if you're not careful you can actually break it by applying even a little pressure.

Re: old "for prisedent" thingy

Going under 2 assumptions, He was a "Local Boy", & was a General, I went down the list of Union Generals. There were 13 born in Md. 4
born in Baltimore. B.G Abercrombie, Bvt. M.G. Buchanan, & M.G. French & Kenly. actually, out of the 13, only B.G. Ord, born in Cumberland
Md. is familiar(because of Ft. Ord) Result: Probably 0.
