There's a spot in the old part of town where the big old brick 1800's businesses are where they tore down one of the buildings. They scraped the dirt underneath, and will be building over it soon. There are loads of pieces of old broken bottles and china/porcelain from the 1800s. Lots of signals too. I have permission to the site, and will never get it cleaned out before the new building begins...so if anyone wants to hit it, give me a shout.

I found a few interesting things here...an eagle button, some sort of jewelry or hair piece, and some other odds and ends but no real old coins yet (a few wheats around the perimiter). Lots of iron. I did find this old compass. When first found, I couldn't even tell what it was. Eventually I got it clean enough to see the needle and thought it was a compass. It was caked over with green corrosion and I couldn't read anything, so it went into the electrolysis for awhile. I now see that there is an "O" where the letter "W" would appear. This makes me think it's French. Does anyone have any idea how old it is? Looks older than the 19th century compasses I've been seeing on the web.

Gypsy, that's very close, if not exact! Thanks for finding that pic! I couldn't find one that matched.

I hope to get back there tomorrow. Will post if I find anything special.

I don't know how old, but my guess would be around 1800. If it was green it would be copper, I think.

Very cool compass!!!!!! Great find. :)

Nice find. I have this compass, looking like that 1 in the pic.

Wow, that one is very similar too. Surely you didn't dig that one, right? Nice!

I didn't get back there today. I did hit a park for a while, but only found clad and 1 wheatie + junk.

Yes, green copper becomes when it 'turns' to oxide.

Theres got to be a Makers mark on it somewhere, look for any symbols or letters ;)

I examined it under 6x magnification, and all I was able to find were the numbers 127 marked on the outside near the button that would pop the lid. Another strange thing is that there is no evidence of a hinge.

Got a museum or a archaeologist club nearby? They could help I guess.
