Greetings Fellow TNers. With winter closing in fast I have been hunting everyday if possible.
I went back to the site where I found the LC and rehunted it today.
5 minutes into the hunt I found the CW button on top of the ground under some corn leaves.
Next the small button and then found the Halfdime 2 hours later both down about 5 inches.
Talk about a mood enhancer.
Hunted until dark. 3 hours total.
It will be deer hunting season here in Illinois this Thursday through Sunday.
A good time not to be in the fields unless you have body armour.
Thanks for looking and best luck to all, Merf

You know i like to stop and think about the history behind a coin drop....
that 1836 the person who dropped it probably knew he lost it. that was a lot of money to some people back then.
also people lived an average of 40 years back then, life was hard and those pioneers busted thier butts to survive.
and when you think about that nice 1836 the person who dropped it has probably been gone now for for at least 135 years. kinda mind baffeling isnt it>

I bet when the person lost it they searched for a long time trying to find it.
The halfdime is so small it would be one of the hardest coins to find when dropped.
I think that back in those hard times people hid thier money in the house and did not carry it except to go to the store or trading post. I doubt if kids had any money.

Hope you get a buck as special as that coin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Nana-----I think this is the second of 2 short 4 day seasons. The lead will be flying tomorrow. ::)

When you do come up north here bring lots of warm clothes and long underwear. ;D ;D
Supposed to be a high of 34 tomorrow and 20mph winds. :(

All the best----Merf :)

BIG CONGRATS Merf ! that halfdime and button sure are beauties ;)

What a spectacular coin.. unbelievable condition for 171 years of age!

I've wondered too about pre-1920 lost money and the relative value of these coins in their day.
We can only hope that some trips from the shack while carrying money were to go buy a jug--and that they consumed a good bit of it enroute home & fell down a lot.

Congratulations, it's another coin that I can't yet imagine.

congrats on a fantastic looking coin!!! Wish I could find one of those in any condition!

Thanks Admiral

I dont think they lost very much money back then---The last five sited I hunted where 1870s farmsteads once stood I found --- 6 coins+2 buttons-----3 coin+1 button---------1coin [1761 swedish]+2 buttons------2 coins+1 button------and 2coins +2 buttons at the last site. I think they were quite poor and very careful with their money.
Except after a jug of whisky of course. After they plow and disc the fields it might turn up a batch of new finds.
Sure hope so.

Thanks to all for the resposes and compliments.
The ground is freezing here so the season is about over for MDing.
My wintertime avatar fits the occasion. All the best, Merf
