Hello Tnet Friends! :hello:

I've dreamed of hunting this property ever since I got my metal detector and today I got my chance! :icon_thumright: This property is now owned by the GTAA (Greater Toronto Airport Authority) and is likely slated for demolition. :'( The City of Toronto feels they need another airport to service the city and has consequently been expropriating land to since 1972, and yet there is still no airport! :argue: I made a contact with one of the few remaining residents of the Town of Brougham, Ontario last week and he offered to 'spot me' as I hunted the property.

I started by hunting the areas closest to where the original porches use to be, all I found was nails and beer caps. So I moved further to the back of the property and started finding lots of old iron. I was hunting the base of an old willow tree when this gold ring popped up! What more can I say, except that it made my day! ;D

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!
Dave

The Brougham Commercial Hotel / Commercial House
The Former Commercial Hotel in Brougham, Ontario consists of a two-storey brick building with a gable roof and features pointed arched windows prominently positioned in two dormers with finials and decorative wood fascia. Facing Highway 7, it was initially built as a home and then converted into a hotel. Although it is now being used as offices, the sign "Commercial Hotel” painted on its front façade gives a clear indication of its past. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Historical Value
The Former Commercial Hotel is a good example of 19th-century post-pioneer rural settlement in Canada, at a time when urbanization and a more diverse economy began to transform the rural communities. The building represents a second-generation of progress, and the idea of permanence, consolidation, stabilization and maturation in rural townships. The Former Commercial Hotel is also associated with local Brougham families. The Former Commercial Hotel is the last surviving example of three hotels in Brougham, and is a very good example of Brougham’s prosperous time in a major period of local development in the 1850s and 1860s.

Architectural Value
The Former Commercial Hotel is a two-storey red brick building with a gable roof, and is a good example of rural domestic architecture. The exterior brickwork, pointed arched windows, decorative wood fascia and finials are characteristic elements of the Gothic Revival style, and give the façades a charming and reassuring appearance. The building offers a good example of an effective interior layout with proven flexibility to accommodate different functions over time. The plan was generated within a rectangular footprint, with an entrance point from each side and rooms arranged around a central staircase. The building’s solid timber and brick construction demonstrates good craftsmanship and materials that are evocative of artisanal traditions. It has endured many alterations but appears to be in good condition, with surviving interior details, such as the front door, the stairwell and the balustrade.

Environmental Value
The Former Commercial Hotel, as part of the remaining red brick buildings that stand out among the row of clapboard houses, reinforces Brougham’s present character. Its associated landscape has evolved over time, with the removal of the open porch and the addition of a shed in the rear. However, the site has generally retained its character and relationship to the building. The Former Commercial Hotel acts as a familiar symbolic landmark for the people of Brougham, and it has gained further awareness since the land expropriation by the federal government in 1972 to make way for a new airport.

I found a site that you can use to identify the hallmarks. The crown and 22 means it is 22k. The anchor means it was made in Birmingham England. The Z (from what I can see from what they offer) means it was made in 1949. You can see if you can find the correct Z from the list. I made a best guest from the picture you posted. TMAN...

Look in the lower right hand corner of the home page to find the hallmark identifier page.

Thanks for your help in regard to helping find the date on the ring for me Tex! Here's a better shot of the date letter for all those who are interested! :icon_thumright:

Thanks again,
Dave

Just copied this off the site!
Thanks again Tex, that was a very helpful site!

The stamp indicates your ring was hallmarked prior to 1975 and is 22 carat gold.
The ring was assayed in Birmingham and was hallmarked in 1899.

Thanks very much Doug! :icon_thumright:
There are somewhere between 200 - 300 homes that have been expropriated by the Government of Canada for this airport and they're all currently vacant and boarded up. Some buildings like the 'Commercial House' are still being rented out to the original owners or to tenants, but they all are owned by our government. The dates of these homes range from the early 1800's up to the early 1970's. I'd love to somehow get permission to hunt these vacant home lots, but that would mean dealing with our Federal Government here and the answer would most likely be "NO" at every turn. :dontknow:

It wouldn't hurt to at least ask though would it? :icon_scratch: I'll let you know if I decide to pursue this!

Best of luck to you Doug,
Dave

I know how difficult it is to find a gold ring on the field .... is easy to find on the beach, but not in the field ... I found in the field only four in my entire life.
The photos show that Canada is a special place .... a lot like the old Mother Europe.
H

Awesome ring! Too bad that place is slated for destruction, it's beautiful. Hey, if you don't want that license plate, I'll buy it. I collect em.

Thanks for your post Hispan! ;D
You've been doing very well finding rings on the beach my friend! :notworthy:
This was my fourth gold ring find this year and I've only been detecting for 7 months.

My wife and I were married in Scotland and had our honeymoon in England (my wife grew up in the UK). I've found so many similarities in the topography of Canada when compared to Europe. I spent a week in Germany last October and it looks exactly like Canada . . . except I think we have better tasting beer! :laughing7:

First gold, (I think) and 19th century at that, with nice British markings.
I didn't know Bermuda was using the old 'Hogge' image on their pennies.
nice tribute to one of the most prized Colonial issues :read2:
Love that old AU

Nice job on finding gold!

As far as gold rings being found this year . . . this is my 6th. :icon_thumright:

Yeah, that penny really surprised me too . . . I've never seen a Bermuda coin before! :o
The 'Hogge' image looks a lot like the lead piggy I found earlier this year.

Let me correct myself Herbie, I do apologize . . . this gold ring makes #5 on the year, not six! :tongue3: Here's a pic of my silver coin finds for this year as well! Not quite as impressive as others here, but not bad for only my first year out!

That's a nice pile of rings!
and heavy old Silver
many hunt for years without totals like that.
Apologies for my failing memory,
the reason is that we all find SO many items, it is hard to even remember what
I've found myself :tongue3:
From the looks of those piles, you've gotten a better ROI with a detector purchase than any other investment I know of
And that feeling when something nice turns up in a pile....
what a great pastime this is ;D Best digs, Herbie.

Awesome ring! And nice finds. I like all those hallmarks, but I haven't a clue what they stand for. Hope you get more from that place. HH

Thanks for your post M! :icon_thumright:

The English were fanatics about hallmarking their gold and silver items, this makes researching dates and manufacturers relatively easy! :D
