Old iron gun hammer

good morning!
This is an old hammer to a weapon that I found near the ports of Providence RI. My son has a few encyclopedia on weapons but nothing is quite matching up. Just curious if anyone can tell me anything about it.

Are you sure it is from a weapon? Looks like part of an elbow catch.

It's a latch. The mounting base is bent. Tony

Yea,I have never seen any gun part that resembled it

This thing is not a gun part. It may look like the "DOG" or safety latch on the above flintlock, but it looks more like some sort of cabinet latch part.
BTW, thats a beautiful circa 1700 gun!

Agree with it appearing to be a latch part. Looks like the brass part broke and they repaired it.

Yup its an old cabinet latch for sure just a little beat up. I had a friend find one a while back and he was convinced it was part of a musket lock but his was missing the mounting plate. Here's one on a cabinet in my front room.....

Heh, I had to actually bring the guy into the house and show him the cabinet to convince him. On that note I found something that's kind of gun hammery.... I'm going to take a pic and post it in a new thread. I think it's likely part of a lock or latch too though.
