paid 60 cents at the rummage sale , the glass is cracked . How old might it be ? What does GTR stand for ? thanks !

Nice find! Reminds me of a railroad lantern with the big loop handle?.maybe the guard and stand were removed. GTR might be Grand Trunk Railway in Canada.

Whale oil was used for many different things til Kerosene took over in the mid-late 1800's.

Well well... what a gem.

What yours has going for it is its rare... due to those top pierced vent shapes.

I cannot quite make them out... not a clear shot of them.

They differ from the bottom ones... which are stars obviously which was more common.

Perhaps this piece was "married" from two separate pieces but not sure.

Yes, In this era there are many flashlights that come with lots of features and help people to survive their life during outdoor and roadside activities. But still, the craze for the lantern is amazing, It looks awesome.
Also, The best way to use lanterns for home decoration is using led lanterns. It also helps in camping.
