old medal ?

[kieser sousa/rip]

Hi all.I found this a few years ago at a colonial site.I was wondering if anyone has ever seen one like it and if I could get some history on it.It's about the size of a silver dollar and you can see that there was once a bust on one side with writing around the edge on both sides. All I can make out is the eagle with the lettering "Advocate of the American system" and not much on the other. Thanks !

Pewter Medallion, popular in the late 19th Century.

Normally commemorating an event or famous person. I think I see 'CLAY' on the head side.

So was there a 'someone' Clay who was an Advocate of the American system?

Your welcome, I found another token of his but there was no eagle on the back I found reference to one here http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/art/artifact/Sculpture_24_00009.htm but yours seems elusive still looking for it tho

I believe your medal was issued in 1828 and is noted in item 25595 on this page:
http://books.google.com/books?id=j6...ook_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CBsQ6AEwBw

The notation suggests the image on that medal is the same as the one you have found; only the wording on the obverse legends (as shown on that medal) differs from yours.

Great find!!
