I found this old belt plate(?) today at a very old log cabin site. Didn't find much else to help date the place, so don't know how old this might be. It is brass, long and narrow, and has two holes where I assume some numbers, insignia, symbols, etc. may have been attached. There is a faint outline of where something may have been attached, but I have turned it every which way but loose, and can't figure out what it could have been! If you recognize this item, or have ANY information about it, I would love to hear from you! Thanks much.

No help with ID but congrats on a nice find

That plate definitely had something attached. Maybe you will find it next time you go there.

Sorry, no help here...but I would be more than happy to have dug it! Cool find...I'm sure one of the plate/buckle/brass-thingy gurus on here will put a positive i.d. on it...ddf

Great plate, congrats. Are you thinking it may be a military academy, militia, or college buckle? Sub 8-)

epaulet maybe?

The front may have a trace outline of what was affixed to it, such as lettering, logo, object, etc...can you sketch it for us if it is there?

I may be wrong but it appears to me to have been a bird with its wings extended ,maybe an eagle.

Sadly, whatever fixed to it was its greatest clue, although I'm pretty sure that construction doesn't pre-date 1900. So my guess is early 1900s.

There is the faint outline of something there, but I can't make out enough of it to trace it.

That's good to know--thanks so much for your help.
