Old New Mexico Smelter Is It A Coke Oven?

Here are topo maps, Waldo is a part of Los Cerrillos area where Spanish took out many, many, millions of dollars worth of gold. South of river (says Galisteo Creek) you see old railroad grade, a dotted line (ends BMX) goes to old train station (only foundation left).
Nice. Thanks.

Changed thread title to Old New Mexico Smelter Is It A Coke Oven? I remember asking about it back in 1990s, has been so long a time hard to remember for sure. Sent the email, waiting for a reply.

SE of Cerrillos ghost town, south side of bridge over Galisteo Creek. Just across bridge heading south pulled over on right a spot wide enough for parking. I dug down a little and found 2 or 3 pieces of flat sugar white quartz vein almost 1" thick. At least 2 of them showed plenty of color. This would probably be general area where gold was supposed to be found in paying quantities during the 1990s. Although another gold area is known more southeast a ways.

Got a reply back from owner of Turquoise Museum at Los Cerrillos ghost town.

It was a coke oven for the steel mills.

I'm hoping he can send me photos of rough Cerrillos turquoise to post. In 1990s he showed me some rough slabs. People back then bought the land shutting down the mine. Right before pandemic started, one email reply was about the recent Cerrillos turquoise mining going on again.

Is it all private or is there pay to hunt site for public?

I don't know, the old mines got sold to become private property. This might be a new mine opened up, don't really have any info on it yet.

Todd Brown is the person just got reply from about coke oven at Waldo... Wow!!! Todd is the tour owner now for historic turquoise mine. Coranado searched these hills for the mine, then sent samples to Spain for use in the crown jewels.
